Tung (Tony) Dong passed away peacefully on January 27th, 2025. He is survived by this wife Wai (Margaret), his daughter Helen (and husband Paul), and sons Howard and Gordon. He was 102 years old.
Tony immigrated to the United States from China at the age of 13. He was raised and mentored from his early teens to young adulthood by his uncle, Fong Sang, and worked in the market his uncle ran in downtown Tucson on Meyer Street.
During World War II, Tony worked on military aircraft as a mechanic, gaining skills in machining, mechanical and electrical work. After the war ended, Tony and Margaret bought the Hiway Market, a local grocery store located on the I-10 frontage road just north of Ruthrauff Road. They operated the market before retiring over 25 years later. After retirement, they enjoyed traveling, including trips to Australia, New Zealand, Vancouver Canada, Hawaii and Alaska. In the early years of retirement, Tony enjoyed yard work and taking long walks with his favorite dog, Mickey.
Tony had many interests, including fishing, tennis, and investing. In the latter, his interest led him to learn how to type and use a computer at the age of 74, so that he could follow the market, which he did every day up until his last few months.
Tony was a devoted husband and father, and a great provider. He and Margaret put all the kids through school at the University of Arizona. Tony also helped all of them move to the locations of their first jobs. And in all of them, he instilled his philosophy to “do everything the right way.”
Rest in Peace, Dad, we love you. You were always there for us and we will miss you. When you see Mickey, give her some pats on the head for us.
