In Loving Memory of Thomas Smallwood, Sr. Thomas Smallwood, Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of deep faith in Christ, passed away surrounded by family who loved him dearly. He was a man whose strength, integrity, and unwavering dedication defined his life and left an enduring mark on everyone who knew him.
Tom was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, to his loving parents Walter and Pauline Smallwood. His family later moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he grew up and built a lifetime of friendships, memories, and accomplishments that would shape the man he became.
Born with a strong work ethic and a big heart, Tom was the kind of man who always went above and beyond to support his family — not just financially, but morally and spiritually. He was a proud believer in Christ and lived his life guided by faith, kindness, and compassion.
Tom shared 44 wonderful years of marriage with his loving wife, Linda, holding on for his last day to celebrate their anniversary. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories. He is survived by his two sons, Matthew Smallwood, Tom Smallwood, Jr, his cherished daughter-in-law Melissa, and his beloved granddaughter Sophia, who brought endless joy and pride into his life.
A lifelong fan of football, Tom’s passion for the game began during his college years when he proudly played as a defensive standout for legendary coach Frank Kush at Arizona State University. That same determination and team spirit carried into his professional life, where he built a long and successful career in the automobile industry. He was known for his honesty, hard work, and the genuine care he showed toward colleagues and customers alike.
Above all, Tom will be remembered as a man who loved his family fiercely. His laughter filled rooms, his wisdom guided those he cared for, and his faith provided strength and comfort to all around him. He was steady in his love, generous in his spirit, and a source of inspiration to everyone blessed to know him.
And of course, anyone who ever asked Tom how he was doing would be greeted with his trademark smile and the same cheerful reply:
“If I was doing any better, I couldn’t stand it.”
That simple phrase, delivered with his signature warmth and humor, summed up who he was — a man grateful for life, grounded in faith, and filled with joy no matter what came his way. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy lives on through the love he gave, the example he set, and the family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
