It is with heartfelt sorrow and deep appreciation that we announce the passing of Shirley Keown, age 96, who left us peacefully on Sunday, March 23rd, 2025. A cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Shirley lived a life filled with love, service, and dedication to her community. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Born on June 26th, 1928, in Chicago, IL, Shirley led a life rich with purpose and compassion. Throughout her 96 years, she was a tireless volunteer, a mentor, and a woman of extraordinary talents. A lover of books, Shirley was passionate about reading and shared that passion by teaching adults to read through her work with the Literacy Council. She was also deeply involved with the Friends of the Hammond Public Library, where she served on the Board in many roles including President, always advocating for the importance of education and access to literature.
Shirley spent her years knitting beautiful afghans, baby blankets, and hats which she lovingly made for many different causes, always seeking to offer warmth and comfort to those in need. Her creativity and kindness extended beyond the tangible; her volunteer work amongst many charities including the Senior Olympics, the Boy Scouts of America, and Dyer Methodist Church reflect her unwavering commitment to helping others.
A woman with a zest for life, Shirley toured the United States and Europe as a member of the Sweet Adelines Choir, where she found joy in both singing and traveling. Her love for music and the camaraderie of the choir brought her immense happiness, and she was proud of the many friendships she made along the way.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 87 years, Jesse B. Keown. They met in Hammond, IN in 1948 and married soon afterward. They made Dyer, IN their home for over 60 years where Shirley was the proud matriarch of a large and loving family, who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her four sons, Leslie, Dan (Joanne); Jim (Virgie); and Ron (Maria), ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brother Robert Linn and many nieces and nephews. Her family was her greatest joy, and she took pride in watching her legacy of love and service grow with each new generation.
In addition to her family, Shirley leaves behind a community that is better for having known her. Her kindness, selflessness, and dedication to others made a lasting impact on everyone she encountered. Her warmth and generosity will be greatly missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire us all.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Calumet Area Literacy Council of Indiana, a cause dear to her heart.
Rest in peace, Shirley. Your love and light will live on in all of us.
