With heavy hearts but grateful spirits, we celebrate the life of Prospero “Pico” Lopez, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, friend, and husband, who passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at the age of 94.
Born on December 30, 1930, Pico—as he was lovingly known—lived a life full of laughter, purpose, and heart. His name, Prospero, means “fortunate,” and all who knew him would agree: we were the fortunate ones to have been loved by him.
Pico served his country in the Korean War—a chapter of his life he rarely spoke about, but one his family honors. He went on to serve in a different way, dedicating over 40 years to the United States Postal Service as a Fleet Service Manager. A gifted mechanic and master carpenter, he could fix anything with his hands and improve everything with his heart. Whether it was a car in the driveway, a project around the house, or a moment that needed laughter—he always made things better.
One of Pico’s greatest joys was raising and racing horses, a passion he poured himself into for over 20 years. He cared for them with the same patience and pride he gave to everything else in life—feeding, grooming, and preparing them for the track right on his own property. His love for horses wasn’t just a hobby; it was a way of life that spoke to his deep sense of stewardship, discipline, and quiet joy.
He married the love of his life, Stella, in 1984. Their love was steady, playful, and deeply inspiring. He never told her no, and nothing brought him more joy than seeing her smile. Together, they shared a life of adventures—annual trips to Rocky Point with dear friends, summer camping in Alpine surrounded by family, and travels that filled their home with beautiful keepsakes and stories to match. His joy for life was matched only by the joy he brought to others.
Pico was a prankster by nature, a storyteller by heart, and a true example of what it means to lead with love. He cherished time with his grandchildren, often drawing out belly laughs with his jokes, antics, and warm, lighthearted ways. His favorite treats were peanut brittle, carrot cake, and chocolate bundt cake—but nothing lit up his face quite like his wife’s homemade tacos with peas.
Beyond family and friends, Pico was a devout Catholic and a generous soul. He quietly gave to causes he believed in, including sponsoring children through Children of America up until his final days. His faith was the quiet force behind everything he did—steadfast, humble, and constant.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Stella, who passed in 2022. His longing to be reunited with her is now fulfilled, and while we mourn our loss, we rejoice in their reunion—with each other, and with the Lord they both loved so deeply. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and joy. His life was a masterclass in what it means to be a man: faithful, hardworking, generous, and full of heart.
He will be missed more than words can say—especially his jokes, his stories, his twinkling eyes, and the steady love he gave so freely. But his spirit lives on in every life he touched, every laugh he sparked, and every lesson he quietly taught.
We are better because of him. And we are grateful.
