Miller Franklin Hughes Jr. of Tucson, Arizona passed away peacefully in his home on August 23rd, 2025.
Born March 18th, 1945 in St. Louis, MO to the late Grace V. (Wilson) and Miller F. Hughes Sr.
Frank grew up in Evansville, Indiana, graduated from Harrison High School in 1963 and attended the University of Indiana earning a bachelors in business. He was a Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity brother.
While working for Alcoa Industries in Century City, CA, Frank met the future love of his life, Mary Medina. They married in 1977 and welcomed their son, Justin, in 1980. While working for Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo, CA he relocated his family to Tucson, Arizona in 1981 where he continued to work for Hughes Aircraft (now Raytheon Technologies) as a classified accountant until retiring in 2011. During this time he also served on the board for the Beacon Foundation, an organization dedicated to job training for adults with disabilities.
In his spare time Frank loved to play and watch golf with his family. He followed all sports and was a loyal University of Arizona and IU sports fan. He enjoyed silent films, war history and crafting haikus for special occasions. His handwritten thank you notes were a loving sign of his old fashioned ways. Frank’s great passion was landscaping, both at his home and at the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch in Tucson where he and Mary were part owners. Specifically he designed and created beautiful and aesthetic outdoor spaces around the lush desert landscape that he called home for so many decades.
Frank will be remembered for being a loving Grandfather to his two Grandchildren. Whether it was preparing a meal outside on the barbecue together, taking them golfing, vacationing, celebrating their school accomplishments or later sharing in the maintenance of his prized white 911 Carrera, he never missed an opportunity to offer a teachable moment that he thought would enhance their lives. He also made anyone close feel extra special when he clipped/saved a newspaper article that he thought might pertain.
Frank is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Justin and Lowry Hughes; their children Cayden and Hayley; and his sister Mary (Dr. David) Cory. In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his wife Mary in June 2025. He was followed in death by his beloved sister Susan Haynie.
The family welcomes donations for the dedication of a hummingbird garden in Frank and Mary’s honor at the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch & Resort. Donations can be made to Justin Hughes Zelle Recipient (520) 548-5772 -Include name and contact in memo.
