Mary Ann Ruth, 88, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away on July 4, 2025 - going out with a BANG was so her style!Born on December 21, 1936, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Laura and Lehman Gambill, Mary Ann lived life on her own terms, with a sharp sense of humor and a bold spirit for adventure, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew her.Mary Ann attended Chaffey High School in Ontario, California, where she spent her early years before relocating to Tucson, where she made her home for over 35 years. A proud security guard at Hughes Aerospace (now Raytheon), she often shared fond memories of her time there. Mary Ann had a deep love for animals, particularly birds, raising canaries and chickens throughout her life. She also cared for her cats Sweetie and Baby, and found solace in her garden. In earlier years, she enjoyed taking her grandchildren to the Colorado River, creating memories by the water.
Known for her spicy personality, she was a comedian in her own right, keeping those around her on their toes with her quick wit and no-nonsense attitude.
Mary Ann is survived by her family members: her daughter Chris Sawyer, and grandchildren Natalie Reed, Parrisa Chambers, Sheeryn Reed, and Shelby Turner. She was preceded in death by her brother Benny, her cherished daughter Susan Reed, and her beloved grandchildren Alisha Bryant and Nick Wood. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her.
Per her wishes, Mary Ann will be cremated at Avenidas Funeral Home in Tucson. Her surviving family will honor her request to have her ashes scattered in the serene Redwood Forest of California, a place that held special meaning to her.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a local animal shelter in Mary Ann’s memory, reflecting her lifelong love for animals.
