- With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of Marty Sykes’ passing today. If you’ve lived in Tucson for any length of time, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Marty and his beloved wife Josie—partners in life for over 63 years and the warm, welcoming faces behind Royal Pet on Tanque Verde. For decades, they were the go-to place that groomed, bathed, and boarded our beloved pets.
- They also helped many find their perfect rescue companions, and we were fortunate to be one of them. Our sweet dog Coco came into our lives through Marty and Josie, and she brought us immeasurable joy for many years. Marty was more than a local business owner—he was a force of nature along with his wife Josie. Sharp-witted, deeply passionate, and endlessly kind, he poured his heart into everything he did. Whether it was caring for animals, building a business, or sharing stories with customers, Marty brought a rare authenticity and grit to every moment.
- Many may not know that Marty was also a highly accomplished boxer in his youth. That same discipline and determination shaped the way he lived—steadfast, resilient, and full of heart. He was the kind of person who made you feel seen, heard, and valued. We will miss Marty terribly.
- His legacy lives on not only in the pets he took care of for loyal customers, but in the lives he touched with his humor, generosity, and unwavering spirit. We find comfort knowing there’s a special place in heaven for those who are kind to God’s creatures. Marty definitely has upgraded heavenly status. Our deepest condolences go out to Josie and the entire Sykes family. May they find comfort in the love and memories shared by all who had the privilege of knowing Marty. Rest in peace, dear friend. You made Tucson better just by being in it.
