Lupe Martinez, 80, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2025, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family. Born November 22, 1944, in El Paso, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Leonor Silva and sister to the late Raymond Mancera Tharp and mother to the late Frank Anthony Gonzales. In 1971, Lupe married Leo Martinez, the love of her life and partner of over 50 years. Lupe’s proudest achievements were always linked to her family, and she cherished every moment spent laughing with her beloved grandchildren.
Lupe dedicated much of her life to education, serving as an Exceptional Education Teacher for Tucson Unified School District. Her signature sarcasm and unfiltered humor were legendary, always accompanied by boundless love and affection. A passionate admirer of interior design, Lupe filled her home with beauty, warmth, and several beloved Frenchies. She was also unofficially known as the family casino queen and rarely turned down an invite to test her luck.
Lupe is survived by her devoted husband Leo, children Perry Martinez (Pat), Rhonda Portillo (Frank), Vienna Martinez, Lisa Marie Yrigoyen, Christopher Eric Martinez (Stefanie), and Mario Xavier Martinez and her brother Anthony Mancera Tharp.
A memorial will be held Saturday, June 14th, 2025, at 10 a.m., at The River, 3198 N Flowing Wells Rd, Tucson, AZ 85705, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Lupe’s memory to the Humane Society of Pima County.
