Debra Ann McCurdy (Debbie) was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1960 in the small town of Deming, New Mexico. She passed away on November 29, 2024 surrounded by love in her home in Sahuarita, Arizona.
Debbie was born in Deming, New Mexico, but moved to Tucson, Arizona at the young age of 11 with her mom, dad and sisters. When she entered high school, she was well known for her athletic skills. Her classmates said “She ran like tiny lightening! Who had a chance in the other lanes?! No one!! Debbie was by far the fastest sprinter on the Rincon Women’s Track Team ‘74-’75.”
Debbie passed on her competitiveness and athleticism to her 3 children. You could find her on the diamond hitting baseballs to her son; in the football stands supporting her son in the marching band; or in the gym cheering for her daughter on the court. Debbie was not just an enthusiastic champion for her family and friends, she was fiercely loyal and a protector of all those she loved and cared about. She would do anything she could to help people. Debbie was determined to help those around her succeed. She worked diligently at everything she did and her co-workers at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) loved working alongside her.
Debbie worked for AAFES for 25 years before she retired. She was a compassionate and empathetic boss lady who loved joking with her colleagues and employees. In 2009, Debbie spent half a year in Kuwait supporting our country and our troops while working for AAFES. It was a very proud moment in her life to be able to assist and contribute her expertise.
Debbie was married to the love of her life, Michael McCurdy, for 42 years. Together they built a beautiful life and raised a loving family. Debbie enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. Some of her adventures took her to Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, Ireland, Hawaii, Uruguay and various states in the U.S.
Debbie was an amazing daughter, sister, military wife, mom, grandma, great grandma, and friend. She was strong, fun, always up for mischief, sharp-witted, had a great sense of humor, LOVED music and going to concerts. Debbie was kind, generous, hard-working, believed in love and making the most of life.
Debbie leaves behind her husband Michael McCurdy as well as her children Jennifer (Francisco) Leon, Sean (Taylor) McCurdy, and Evan McCurdy; grandchildren Lorena (Rene), Sonya (Eliseo), Nathaniel and Giovanni; great grandchildren Wilson and Maya; mom Esther Chavez; siblings Teresa (Richard) Carter, Rachel Klarner, Betty (Johnathan) Loffelmacher. Debbie is preceded in death by her father Moncerate Madrid and brother-in-law Sidney Eads.
“So go and run free with the angels. Dance around the golden clouds for the lord has chosen you to be with him. And we should feel nothing but proud although he has taken you from us and our pain a lifetime will last. Your memory will never escape us but make us glad for the time we did have. Your face will always be hidden deep inside our hearts. Each precious moment you gave us shall never, ever depart. So go run free with the angels as they sing so tenderly and please be sure to tell them to take good care of you for me.”
