With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of David P. Smith—beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished friend—on September 7, 2025, at the age of 90.

Known affectionately as “Dave,” he was preceded in death by his parents, David and Effie; his devoted son, Jeffrey Smith; and his daughter-in-law, Sandy Smith. He leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom through his children: Steve Smith; Bruce Smith and Dawn; and Becky Boyd and her husband, John. He was a proud grandfather to Stephanie, Eric, Travis, Sam, Abby, Conroy, Corban, and Bianca, and a great-grandfather to many more.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dave was adopted by his cousins in Iowa, who became his siblings and lifelong companions. At just 16, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty. They shared 67 years of marriage—a long chapter of life marked by family, milestones, and shared history.

Dave’s passion for learning led him to earn a PhD in Electrical Engineering. He spent 37 years at 3M in the Twin Cities, where he served as a division scientist and contributed to over 30 patents. He worked in the very lab where Post-It notes were invented, and his career took him across the globe, forging friendships and collaborations in the U.S., Europe, and beyond.

After retiring from 3M, Dave shared his expertise as a professor at the University of Minnesota, where he inspired students with practical, hands-on knowledge and a deep love for engineering.

In 2007, Dave moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he embraced retirement with zest—riding his scooter alongside his loyal dog, Rocky, and enjoying the mild winters he fondly called “home.” Ever the adventurer, Dave completed a certified 1,000-mile scooter ride in under 24 hours, a feat he took great pride in. He regularly rode to the Kitt Peak Observatory, where he volunteered to share his love of astronomy, guiding visitors through the wonders of the planets and stars.

Dave was a man of curiosity and generosity. He loved the outdoors, delighted in explaining physics and engineering concepts, and treasured time with family and friends. His visits were frequent, his stories unforgettable, and his presence deeply felt.

Though his final years were marked by the challenges of dementia, Dave’s brilliant mind, kind heart, and vibrant spirit will not be forgotten. His family and friends will carry his memory with love, gratitude, and admiration—for the man who gave much, taught well, and lived fully.

He will be laid to rest near the home he loved in Tucson, at All Faiths Cemeteries, beneath a tree along the way to Saguaro National Forest, with a view of the desert and mountains that he enjoyed during his time in Arizona.
