Carol Catherine McDonald, beloved mother, dedicated teacher, and passionate community volunteer, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 93. Born on February 20, 1932, in Los Angeles, California, Carol was the cherished daughter of Elmer Ellsworth Stone and Catherine Young. Her parents also had a son named George E. Stone. Her early years were spent in Hermosa Beach, where she cultivated a love for the ocean and the outdoors that would accompany her throughout her life.
A proud graduate of Redondo Union High School, Carol went on to attain her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of New Mexico in 1955, where she was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi, the swim team, and both the field hockey and water ballet teams. Following her graduation, she embarked on a fulfilling career as a teacher in Edgewood and Newport Mesa Schools, sharing her passion for knowledge and nurturing the minds of countless young students.
In November of 1955, Carol married Alan M Yard, and they welcomed their son, Mark Yard, on February 3, 1959, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Throughout her life, Carol lived in various places, including Albuquerque, Houston, and Seattle, before returning to California in 1970, following her divorce from Alan. It was here in Newport Beach that she began a new chapter in her life when she married Dr. Carl E. McDonald, expanding her family to include Karen, Mike, and Mark.
Carol's zest for life was evident as she took up tennis at the age of 40, a sport she enjoyed passionately into her late 70s. Apart from her athletic pursuits, her spirit of service shone brightly through her volunteer work with the Red Cross for five years, as well as her contributions to the Newport Beach Police Department and the Newport Beach Animal Shelter.
Survived by her loving children, Karen, Mike, and Mark. Carol leaves behind a legacy of love, education, and community service. Her kindness and compassion touched the lives of many, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. In moments of joy, her laughter will linger in the hearts of those she loved; in times of sorrow, her strength will be a lasting inspiration. Carol’s remarkable life reminds us all to embrace every moment and to give back to our communities, just as she did tirelessly throughout her life.
